“Oxenfree” Unique and Beautiful New Horror Game
Many horror video games pride themselves on blood, gore, guts, and jump scares. Other horror games are deep mysteries rooted in a heavy story. 2016 looks to be bringing a brand new style of horror game which mixes elements of both types plus a new added twist. Oxenfree travels the player back into the time of childhood and the feeling of choosing your own adventure with of course a horror twist.
Brand new independent studio Night School is producing Oxenfree. Based out of Los Angeles, the company was founded by cousins Sean Krankel and Adam Hines. Sean is a former Disney developer while Adam developed for Telltale. Their mission is to cross story telling and games with a beautiful and unique visual style. Night School seeks to create entertainment that is filled with wonder, danger and humor.
The story of Night School‘s debut Oxenfree is as follows:
Oxenfree is a single player game that’s equal parts coming-of-age tale and supernatural thriller. You play as Alex, a bright, rebellious teenaged girl who brings her new stepbrother Jonas to an overnight party on a decommissioned military island. The festivities are framed by a dangerous sneak to a forbidden beach, celebrating with friends and navigating prickly situations with enemies. But the night takes a horrifying turn when you unwittingly open a ghostly rift spawned from the island’s cryptic past. How you deal with these events, your peers, and the ominous creatures you’ve unleashed is up to you.
A story presented in that nature guarantees a unique game play. Players will have the option of dialogue choices which will warrant different responses from the characters and surroundings. Multiple play throughs will be a must with Oxenfree causing different clues and results to appear. The goal is to explore your surrounding environment, find hints as to what is happening, and do not die!
A useful device in Oxenfree is the radio seen in the trailer above. The radio is brought to provide light music while the teens enjoy a fire on the beach at night. Quickly it becomes the catalyst to the rift which allows the ghostly figures to escape. The radio emits weird sounds when frequencies are aggravated making the radio the only hope for survival. The music that emulates from the radio are all original tunes courtesy of scntfc. It is one man who is bringing the soundtrack to life and with Night School promise to bring the music outside the game for everyone’s enjoyment.
It is well known that teen mysteries and slashers influenced much of the 80’s and 90’s horror movement. Although the game takes place in modern time, the story telling is very similar to those nostalgic films from the 80’s and 90’s. Inspired by classics like Poltergeist and The Goonies the game promise to bring a whimsical coming of age nostalgic tale with a unique perspective to horror gaming.
Oxenfree will be available on Xbox One, PC, and Steam on January 15, 2016. Stay tuned to the important links below for all the latest information from Night School and Oxenfree. You can check out the even creepier and stranger official Xbox One trailer right below.
