‘The Purge: Election Year’ Comes July 1st – NEW TRAILER
We Are Indie Horror may focus on the independent unknown side of horror but the minds behind this madness seek horror from whenever. One of the more mainstream films that really have grasped the attention of the team here at We Are Indie Horror is The Purge. Today we get a new trailer for the latest in the series due out July 4th and subtitled appropriately for this coming year The Purge: Election Year.
Check out the trailer below and read on to find out why this film is important to the indie horror world.
The Purge: Election Year tells the following story:
It’s been two years since Leo Barnes (Frank Grillo) stopped himself from a regrettable act of revenge on Purge Night. Now serving as head of security for Senator Charlie Roan (Elizabeth Mitchell), his mission is to protect her in a run for president and survive the annual ritual that targets the poor and innocent. But when a betrayal forces them onto the streets of D.C. on the one night when no help is available, they must stay alive until dawn…or both be sacrificed for their sins against the state.
The trailer is slick, right? It is intense and it shows enough of the story that we are intrigued. Although personally maybe a bit too much of the story. If pass Purge films have showed us anything though, it is the trailers can be misleading. Regardless we are excited for the latest installment.
Now you might be asking yourself “This is an indie horror website, why are you covering a major studio production?” Well the answer is simple. From the very first Purge there is something to be learned. The original story which was written by the director is a contained and important lesson in cheap story telling. Although it starred Ethan Hawke which is probably where most of the budget went, you are looking at a story that takes place in one location with closed windows. The setting itself lends itself to the true indie spirit. You put people in one room and see what happens. With an outside influence that is mentioned and discussed in the beginning of the film, the entire rest of the story is set up for nothing but brutal intensity.
Previous to the Purge series, director James DeMonaco – who is returning for the third installment Election Year – directed one feature. Little New York was met with praise specifically to the direction and since then Demonaco has given his talents to Blumhouse and Universal to deliver a tension filled horror thriller which allows the audience to fear for the nation. We currently are in a very unstable political client leading many Americans fearing for a real Purge. As absurd as that may sound, it is the straight truth. Not only did The Purge play with the indie artist set-up, the commentary on the political climate makes the film a must see. The clever creative team puts The Purge: Election Year taking place and being released during the most important election in America’s history. This allows for the a direct connect behind the audience. Releasing on July 1st could not be any more perfect. American’s being proud in their country during a very important year and this years Independence Day will go to the film over the opening weekend and be scared all for the right reasons.
Like it or not, The Purge series is an important lesson for all independent filmmakers and it is our pleasure to share with you the new trailer. We Are Indie Horror will absolutely be checking out this film and seriously we cannot wait. In the meantime grab those masks and if a certain candidate wins – we may have a Purge sooner rather than later. Check out The Purge: Election Year in theaters everywhere this coming July 1st.
